Report launch and panel discussion on bridging skills gap for job creation in Cox's Bazar

From Jasim Siddique  : In Cox’s Bazar, a report was released and a discussion meeting was held on creating employment for women and youth and meeting the shortage of skills in the workforce.

On Wednesday (April 24), a meeting was held in an elite hotel in Cox’s Bazar with experts and partners from various sectors, government and private.

ILO Bangladesh and Cox’s Bazar Chamber of Commerce and Industry have jointly released a report titled “Skills Demand and Supply Assessment in Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Region”, which identifies skills gaps that are constraining economic growth.

The report identified the lack of qualified trainers, particularly female trainers, as a key barrier to workforce capacity. Lack of sector-specific information on employers hinders workforce development. The low participation of women in training programs proves that inclusive solutions are urgently needed to address these issues and for sustainable economic growth.

The findings were discussed with a view to addressing important issues of skill development and employment generation in the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar region with high economic potential. The panel discussion was titled “Bridging the skills gap for job creation in the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar region for host communities in Bangladesh, encouraging dialogue among a wide range of stakeholders to address the skills gap for job creation in the region.

Director General of Youth Development Department Dr. Gazi Md. Saifuzzaman spoke as the chief guest.

He said, I am very happy to know about the launch of skills demand and supply assessment study in Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar region conducted by ILO. I am confident that the findings of the study will guide governments, private sector, UN agencies, NGOs and development partners to design and deliver quality market based skill development programs for youth and women linked to national skill development. Framework – This is a commendable step towards bridging the skill gap for employment generation in the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Economic Corridor.

 

ILO Bangladesh Country Director Tuomo Pautiainen said the Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong Economic Corridor has significant economic potential due to its favorable location, various government mega-projects in the region and increased private investment in high-potential sectors. We must jointly build human and institutional capacity, increase investment and private sector linkages, and promote partnerships for decent work opportunities. This research on skill assessment is an important step towards proper guidance. It is systematic and sector-specific skill requirements and identifies 49 occupations. which are associated with higher growth and employment in the region.

Global Affairs Canada and Rohingya and Host Community Program Head of Co Operations Vivek Prakash spoke on the occasion. Gwynne Lewis, UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh.

 

He was also present in the meeting Cox’s Bazar Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Abu Murshed Chowdhury, National Skill Development Authority (NSDA) Member (Joint Secretary) Md Johar Ali and many others.
