Today is World Refugee Day : Rohingya gather to return home

Special Correspondent : Today is World Refugee Day. Every year on June 20, the day is observed to raise awareness among international leaders about the inhumane treatment of refugees around the world. The day has been observed since 2001, as decided by the UN General Assembly on December 4, 2000. Prior to that, the day was celebrated in various countries as African Refugee Day until 2000.

On August 25, 2017, the world witnessed a huge humanitarian crisis in the Rakhine state of Myanmar. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled the Rakhine state after violent attacks, whose villages were destroyed. More than 700,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh to escape Myanmar’s military torture and genocide. Besides, there are about 4 lakh more Rohingyas in Bangladesh already. At present, Bangladesh is facing a huge challenge with a large number of Rohingyas. The Rohingyas are also worried about whether they will be able to return to their homeland Myanmar at all with the assurance of citizenship, security and freedom of movement.

Meanwhile, on the eve of World Refugee Day, Rohingyas have rallied in 34 camps at Ukhia-Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar demanding six points. On Sunday (June 19), the rally started at 8 am at the designated place of Rohingya Camp No. 9, 14, 13, 18, 2 West, 1 West, 4 and 16 in Ukhia. Rohingyas from the adjoining camps also took part. Simultaneous protests also began in the Teknaf camps. Rohingyas are urging the world community to return to their homeland through processions and rallies. Millions of Rohingya took part in the protest under the slogan ‘Back to Home’. However, due to rain, the program was completed within half an hour.

Rohingya leader Muhibullah, who was shot dead by miscreants on September 29, 2021, was leading a rally on August 25, 2019 with the same demand. However, although no single organizer or leader of the gathering came forward, the pamphlet described the persecuted Rohingya people as the organizers.

Calling the Rohingya Rohingya, the immediate repatriation of every Rohingya to the villages of Arakan, the inclusion of every agreement on repatriation, the repatriation process must include the United States, the United Nations, the OIC, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Bangladesh, NGOs and all concernedThe protests demanded the repeal of Burma’s 1982 citizenship law, the return of property, and the right to live independently.

Rohingya leaders Mohammad Hossain, head of Rohingya Camp No. 4 in Ukhia, said, “We want safe repatriation and we hope that the logical demands of Rohingyas raised through this year’s rally will be taken seriously in the international arena.”

“We want to return to Myanmar with dignity and respect,” said Qin Mong, president of the Rohingya Youth Association. We are grateful that the government of Bangladesh has set a humane example with our shelter.

Leaders of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights, Dr. Zubair and Master Kamal, Rohingya rights activists Master Yusuf and Nurul Amin addressed a rally at the Lambasia Rohingya Camp 1 East in Ukhia.

They said they do not want to stay in Bangladesh for another moment. The Rohingyas need to be repatriated as soon as possible. The Rohingyas should also be given the same facilities and rules that other nations have in Myanmar. Master Nurul Amin raised a 7-point demand at the rally.

The demand is for immediate repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar. The 1982 Citizenship Act should be repealed, the Rohingya should be quickly repatriated to their respective villages, rights and security should be ensured, the repatriation process should be implemented, IDP camps in Rakhine State should be closed and they should be repatriated, innocent people in Myanmar should be torturedHave to stop.Naimul Haque, commander of 14 APBNs and Mohammad Kamran Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) of 8 APBNs, who were engaged in law and order in the camp, said there were protests at various places in the camp. In 2017, the Rohingya citizens of Myanmar were tortured and forcibly deported to Bangladesh due to the heinous atrocities of the Myanmar army, which is considered as the most horrific exodus of Rohingyas in history. The persecuted Rohingyas have raised a total of 19 demands to the international community through peaceful human chain.
